What is OCD therapy?
OCD therapy is a psychotherapeutic process designed for individuals struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is characterized by intrusive, distressing thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) aimed at reducing anxiety. Therapy helps clients understand how OCD is maintained and gradually change their relationship to obsessions and the need for control.
How does OCD most commonly manifest?
People with OCD often seek therapy due to: intrusive, repetitive obsessive thoughts; fear of harming themselves or others; excessive checking, washing, or repeating actions; mental rituals (analyzing, ruminating, reassurance-seeking); feelings of guilt, shame, or fear of being a 'bad person'; intense anxiety that is only temporarily relieved after rituals.
What does the OCD therapy process look like?
Initial session – assessment and understanding the OCD mechanism
During the first session, the therapist and client explore the nature of obsessions and compulsions, their frequency, and their impact on daily functioning. Special focus is placed on understanding how fighting thoughts and performing rituals actually maintain OCD.
Therapeutic work
The therapy takes place through individual sessions, either in-person or online. Each session lasts 50 minutes. The work includes the ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) method, which helps clients gradually face situations or thoughts that trigger anxiety without engaging in compulsive behaviors. The goal is to build tolerance to discomfort and reduce the control that obsessive thoughts have over behavior. In addition to ERP, the therapeutic work includes emotion regulation strategies and changing the relationship to obsessive thoughts.
Confidentiality and safety
All information obtained during therapy is strictly confidential. Maintaining confidentiality is one of the core professional and ethical principles of therapeutic work.
Who is OCD therapy for?
- Individuals diagnosed with OCD
- Those struggling with intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors
- Clients whose rituals and mental checking consume a significant amount of time
- People seeking long-term change rather than temporary relief
- Available online and in person in Belgrade
OCD therapy – in-person vs online
Both in-person and online OCD therapy can be equally effective. In-person sessions allow for work within a therapeutic space, while online therapy offers flexibility and continuity, especially for individuals whose OCD symptoms make attending sessions in person more difficult.
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Do intrusive thoughts mean that I want to act on them?
No. Intrusive thoughts are involuntary and say nothing about your intentions, values, or personality. In fact, they are often the opposite of what is important to you.
Can OCD be cured?
OCD symptoms can be significantly reduced through psychotherapy. The goal of therapy is not to eliminate all discomfort, but to reduce symptom intensity and develop the ability to prevent obsessions from controlling behavior.
How long does OCD therapy last?
The duration of therapy depends on symptom severity and individual needs. Some clients experience improvement relatively quickly, while others require longer-term work.
Can therapy be conducted online?
Yes. OCD therapy can be successfully conducted online, using the same therapeutic approach and structure.
