What is LGBTQ+ affirmative psychotherapy?

LGBTQ+ affirmative psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that recognizes and respects a client’s sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression as natural and valid aspects of who they are. Therapy does not focus on “changing” identity, but on creating a safe space where clients can explore their experiences, emotions, and relationships without fear of judgment or pathologization.

What challenges do LGBTQ+ individuals most commonly face?

LGBTQ+ clients often seek therapy due to: anxiety and depressive symptoms; internalized homophobia or transphobia; fear of rejection or non-acceptance; self-esteem and identity-related difficulties; challenges in romantic or family relationships; stress related to coming out; experiences of discrimination, stigma, or minority stress.

What does the LGBTQ+ affirmative psychotherapy process look like?

Initial session – safety and understanding context

The first session focuses on getting to know each other, creating a sense of safety, and understanding the personal and social context in which the client lives. The therapist approaches the client without assumptions and with a clear affirmative stance.

Therapeutic work

Therapy is conducted through individual sessions, either in person or online. Each session lasts 50 minutes. The work may include themes of identity, relationships, emotional regulation, anxiety, self-acceptance, and personal boundaries, in line with the client’s needs.

Confidentiality and safety

All information shared during therapy is strictly confidential. Protecting confidentiality and respecting the client’s identity are fundamental professional and ethical principles of practice.

Who is LGBTQ+ affirmative psychotherapy for?

  • LGBTQ+ individuals seeking a safe and affirming therapeutic space
  • Those experiencing anxiety, stress, or emotional difficulties
  • Clients who wish to work on self-acceptance and identity-related themes
  • Individuals who have had negative experiences with non-affirmative therapists
  • Available online and in person in Belgrade

LGBTQ+ affirmative psychotherapy – in-person vs online

Both in-person and online LGBTQ+ affirmative psychotherapy can be equally effective. In-person sessions offer work within a secure therapeutic space, while online therapy can provide additional privacy and accessibility, especially for clients living in less supportive environments. The format is chosen collaboratively with the therapist.
